I was born and raised in Brooklyn, near Flatbush avenue, in a neighborhood called Ditmas Park. It was (and still is) a neighborhood that’s sandwiched by Hasidic and Afro-Caribbean enclaves, often times overlapping, a patchwork of homes made up of poor and middle class families. A son of Chinese-Malay immigrants, at home I’d eat Bee Hoon mee and Rojak. Outside, just past the Victorian house lined streets, I’d walk by dice games being played in alleys to get curried goat and Djon Djon, a Haitian black mushroom rice. As a kid these experiences made me acutely aware of how race and class impact the course of peoples lives. As an adult, that awareness has developed into my need to tell stories about people marginalized by those factors.
For most of my childhood I believed I would become something boringly respectable, like a financial analyst, but wound up at NYU’s undergraduate film program at Tisch. After going through the animation then film/TV track I graduated into the writers strike in 2008 and cut my teeth on low budget indie features in NY, before moving onto sound mixing commercials. Needing distance from my hometown I moved to LA and found myself as director and cinematographer on a lot of commercial food and travel content. When I’m not working with food or travel I’m often writing, directing, and DPing various narrative/documentary projects.
